Hell's Gate Air
Tram
Who can resist visiting a place with
a name like "Hell's Gate"? At peak spring levels, an astounding 757
million l (200 million gal) of water per minute rush through this 35-m
(110-ft) gorge - the narrowest point of the Fraser River. This volume is a
whopping double that of Niagara Falls!
You can enjoy an up-close look via
the aerial cable tramway, which takes enthralled visitors for a 152-m
(500-ft) descent to river level. Andrenaline junkies are in luck, too.
They can traverse the suspension bridge to get a firsthand look at the
surging water below.
Hell's Gate is located in the
Fraser Canyon, about 45 minutes north of
Hope on Highway 1.

Hope
Othello
Tunnels:
East of Chilliwack, near Hope. In
the early 20th century, the Canadian Pacific Railway was determined to
link the
Kootenay Rockies
region of BC to the coast by rail. Rather than bypass the Coquihalla Gorge
-a 91-m (300-ft) chunk of solid granite- the Othello Tunnels were
constructed by slicing through five different rock faces almost entirely
by hand.
Today, the tunnels are recognized
as a spectacular feat of engineering - and boasted to be the world's most
expensive mile of railway track. The four main tunnels and two bridges
offer visitors astounding views of the surrounding mountainside.
The Othello Tunnels are found in
Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park near
Hope, two hours
east of
Vancouver via
Highway 1 or 7.
